plan to burn the islamic holy book to mark the ninth anniversary of the 9/11 attacks. the u.s. embassy in kabul has condemned the church's plan. elsewhere in afghanistan nato announced the u.s. soldier was skilled in fighting in the east on sunday. the fifth american death in afghanistan in september. also today it was widely reported that the top u.s. and nato commander in afghanistan has asked for 2,000 additional troops. general david petraeus wants them to join the 140,000 strong international force to help train afghan security forces. in pakistan today at least 19 people died and 40 more were wounded in a suicide bombing near a police station. the pakistani taliban claimed responsibility for the car bomb in the northwestern town. a spokesman said the bombing targeted police because they encourage residents to set up militias and fight the taliban. at least 44 people have died in landslides in guatemala, and dozens more are missing. heavy rains unleashed multiple landslides this weekend including on one of the country's main highways. rescue workers struggled today to try and free

in this valley, five to 20 women died in childbirth every year so. she went to two years of training and cost us about $800 and her pay is just over a dollar a day and not one women has died since she's come back and is working there. and now i'll jump forward a bit. when we get hundreds of letters in our office and e-mails and some of the most powerful e-mails are those from our armed forces serving in afghanistan and sometimes iraq. recently i got an e-mail from a colonel. his first name is kris. he's the commander of the saber forces called,fob. ford operating base in north star province in eastern afghanistan. one of the most difficult and dangerous areas to serve. he wrote to me first as a commander but also as a father and a husband and told me a little bit about how difficult it was and then he said, you know, he had all his guys read three cup office tea and really without education, whatever we do here is in vain. it's education is what we determined if these young men and women become literate patriots or illiterate terrorists and the stakes could not be higher. this comes from a unite

with temperatures in the triple digits. let's get the latest holiday weekend forecast for all of us still a day and a half left to enjoy with the weather channel's scott williams. good morning. >> well good morning, alex. good morning, everyone on this labor day weekend. we have weather to talk about. of course earl is long gone but leaving dangerous rip currents. many of the beaches are still open but some still have a few restrictions out there. we are tracking a cluster of showers and storms to the east of the leeward islands, what is left of gaston trying to redevelop a little later on. a high probability of that. take a look at the cluster of showers and storms in the southern gulf of mexico. there's a chance that could develop into a tropical cyclone as well. we'll watch for that. fairly quiet across much of the nation here, looking at the radar, a few showers and storms moving through the high plains and also the upper midwest. and along the gulf of mexico. but look at the forecast for parts of the northeast. picture perfect, certainly a touch of fall, 79 degrees for the high temperature
